Not only Arizona’s third-largest city after Phoenix and Tucson, Mesa is also the largest suburban city by population in the entire country. Located 20 miles east of downtown Phoenix, Mesa serves as the central community of the East Valley. It covers a land area of 138 square miles, home to more than 500,000 residents.
Mesa was registered in 1878 as a one-square-mile townsite, then incorporated in 1883 with a population of 300 people. Mesa grew significan’tly during World War II with the openings of Falcon and Williams Army Airfields. Today, Mesa hosts plenty of spring training baseball at HoHoKam and Sloan Parks, while the city is also home to such higher education facilities as ASU’s Polytechnic campus. The Sirrine House and Alhambra Hotel are two of Mesa’s many historic properties, in addition to more than 2,200 acres of parkland.
