The city of Scottsdale, AZ, makes up part of Greater Phoenix in eastern Maricopa County, within the Salt River Valley. Under its official nickname, “The West’s Most Western Town,” Scottsdale is home to more than 255,000 people across a relatively large land area of 184 square miles. It has become Arizona’s sixth-largest city.
Named Scottsdale in 1894 after founder Winfield Scott, the area grew steadily over the decades to follow. In 1950 Motorola became the first of many technology companies to build a plant in Scottsdale. The city was incorporated in 1951 with a population of just 2,000 residents, followed by a series of large-scale residential communities that began to spring up in the 1970s and 80s. Today, Scottsdale has been called “the desert version of Miami’s South Beach,” driven primarily by tourism with more than 70 hotels and resorts, plus several shopping areas.
